Many have known Barbara Chandler as the First Woman of Idaho Tennis. Barbara was the 1946 National U.S. Women’s Clay Court & National Junior Hard Court Champion. She held the Idaho Singles, Doubles, & Mixed Championships for 15 years & the Intermountain Singles, Doubles & Mixed Championships for nine years. In 1996 she was inducted into the Worlds Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame. In 1957, a new pool company was formed by Bill & Barbara Chandler & Bob Clark. The company was originally known as Swim, Inc., building two vinyl pools that first year. In 1958, Swim, Inc operated out of a trailer. Next to that trailer at the corner of Roosevelt and Kootenai was a pool, an office and a dressing room. Barbara taught swimming lessons and tennis lessons helping to keep the fledgling business going. That same year Bill sold his first gunite pool. Customers Jerry & Gladys Shoup invested $1,800 and trusted Bill to build his 1st swimming pool.
In 1959 Bill sold Swim Inc. to Bob and started Custom Pools, Inc. In 1962, Custom Pools, Inc. moved to Redway Road, then in 1970 to its warehouse location on Osage. Custom Pools built its retail location in 1989 to better serve the growing list of clientele developed over the previous 30 years in business. Once the store was well established Bill decided it was time to play some golf and Steve Chandler took over management of the business. Building on Bill’s reputation for a quality product and his legacy of integrity Custom Pools has become Idaho’s premier designer and builder of pools, spas, water features, and landscape projects.

The photo to the left was taken in June of 2004, and represents his first creation over 50 years ago. Mrs. Shoup owned the home and pool until she moved to Los Angeles in 2002.
